Book and Bloom: The God of Good Looks.
Title: The God of Good Looks. (A Novel).
Author: Breanne Mc Ivor
Pages: 372 (including Behind the Book and Acknowledgement)
Rating: 5 out of 5 Crowns. (The audible is fantastic).
The Book:
“The God of Good Looks’ was written by Breanne Mc Ivor. Mc Ivor is also the author of “Where There Are Monsters,” a collection of short stories. “The God of Good Looks’ is her first novel. “The God of Good Looks” is centered around Trinidad’s culture as the main character, Bianca Bridge, tries to navigate her life from being a model to being a writer, which is her passion.
The author takes the reader inside Bianca’s thoughts by allowing us to read her diary entries. Bianca shares her experience of being caught in a scandal, her relationship with her parents, and working for Obadiah Courtland.
Obadiah Courtland is the supporting character in “The God of Good Looks.” As I read, I pictured Coleman Domingo playing Obadiah Courtland. Throughout the book, Obadiah expresses his love through “reads” and the expression of caring through sarcasm.
Obadiah assumes Bianca has the best life, being her father owns many businesses. Still, his assumptions end up making him look like an “ass” when he takes the time to understand and listen to Bianca’s story.
I appreciate Mc Ivor’s writing of “The God of Good Looks” and the audio a little more. When listening to the book, I felt like I had a cubicle way off in the corner of Extempto, and I could hear the chatter between Bianca, Obadiah, Radhika, and Dante Drager on decisions about the Extempto Magazine and the OC office.
I would recommend “The God of Good Looks” to anyone whose life started over without their permission. I recommend this book to anyone in question of their childhood upbringing because of what they saw or heard but did not fully understand. Lastly, I recommend this book to anyone who needs to be reminded of the importance of self-love and good company.
The Bloom:
“The God of Good Looks” made me question my environment and my surroundings when it comes to being in solitude. Sometimes, if we look at being in solitude as being lonely, we find ourselves desperate for touch and communication from people who have no intentions of needing us as much as we may think we need them.
Bianca describes in her journal writings how she thought the “love” that Eric was showing her fulfilled her, but looking back, it made her question herself and her worth. As much as I love being in “solitude,” I must ensure I am not lonely. I also want to surround myself with good company.
… You will see a woman making friends, following her passion, being brave in ways she never thought she could be. A woman building a life.
-The God of Good Looks – Breanne McIvor
While listening and reading “The God of Good Looks,” I felt that the author allowed Bianca to answer the question often asked by someone observing or listening from outside the relationships: “Why did you stay?” Bianca’s reasons for staying made me feel seen, and I am sure it will make other women feel seen and heard as well.
“We believe so much in a person’s potential that we ignore who they are in the present and dismiss the fact that we can’t change people.”

When I heard Bianca share why she held on to empty promises and unmet expectations from Eric and believed things would change in the future, I said aww, to myself. I remember many therapy sessions and my journal entries where I had to remind myself to accept people as they are in the present, not as I expect them to be in the future.
I hope you enjoy reading/listening to this novel as I have and experience a bloom moment.
